Dear Kevin,
Thank you for reaching out to share your thoughts on U.S. military involvement in Iran. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.
Trump just started an illegal war in Iran, and I’m outraged. Our families woke up to the shocking news that we were being dragged into another escalating conflict, and since then American servicemembers have already lost their lives while many more have been put in harm’s way. My wife Pam and I are heartbroken for those families and we are praying for our nation’s servicemembers currently deployed in the region.
I am also furious that President Trump once again ignored our Constitution. Congress has the sole authority to send our troops to war, yet the President launched these military operations without approval from Congress and without a clear plan for what comes next.
That’s why I voted yes on the War Powers Resolution to stop this war from escalating any further. This resolution reasserts Congress’s constitutional authority and requires the removal of United States Armed Forces from hostilities with Iran unless Congress explicitly authorizes military action. Decisions as serious as sending our troops into combat must involve open debate and a vote in Congress. No president, regardless of party, should be able to take our country into war alone.
Let me also be clear about the broader challenge we face. The government of the Islamic Republic of Iran poses serious threats in the region, especially when it comes to its missile capabilities and nuclear ambitions. At the same time, history has shown us that rushing into another large scale war in the Middle East can have devastating consequences for both American families and innocent civilians abroad. Diplomacy, strong alliances, and targeted economic pressure must remain our first tools whenever possible.
Families here in the Valley are tired of endless wars that cost lives and resources without making our country safer. We have loved ones serving in uniform, and they deserve leadership that uses military force only when absolutely necessary and with a clear plan. I will continue fighting to ensure our national security decisions follow the Constitution, protect our servicemembers, and focus on keeping American families safe.
Thank you again for reaching out. Hearing directly from constituents like you helps me do my job better, and I hope you’ll continue to share what matters most to you and your family.
