8th Response from United States Congress Regarding Handala Hack Team Iran War

Dear Mr Neece,

Thank you for contacting me regarding the War with Iran. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

In the dead of night on February 28, 2026, President Trump started an unauthorized, unconstitutional war with Iran. America is now in a war alone with Israel and this president is putting U.S. troops and the entire region at risk. As a combat veteran, I know the terrible realities of war, and I am deeply opposed to any unprovoked strikes carried out without Congressional authorization.

The Constitution is clear: only Congress has the power to declare war. Presidents may act to defend the nation in emergencies, but they cannot unilaterally commit American forces to prolonged hostilities without congressional authorization. That principle exists to ensure that the people, through their elected representatives, have a voice before our country enters another costly and dangerous conflict. I have long supported efforts to reassert Congress's war powers and prevent any president from engaging in unauthorized military action.

I will vote to pass a War Powers resolution to stop this war with Iran. Any new military engagement must be voted on by Congress, not dictated from the Oval Office.

Repressive regimes such as the one in Iran should always be held accountable when they crack down on peaceful protests and the exercise of free speech. That does not mean this nation should start a new war with Iran.

The American people deserve transparency, accountability, and a foreign policy grounded in diplomacy and restraint, not endless escalation. Please know, I will keep working with my colleagues to uphold the Constitution, demand oversight, and pursue a path that protects American lives and prevents another forever war in the Middle East.

Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts. Please continue to contact me on all issues of importance to you and to our district.

Sincerely,

Mike Thompson

Member of Congress
