Dear Mr Neece,
Thank you for contacting my office and expressing your concern over the war waged in Iran. I appreciate your engagement on this issue. I have always said though it was my name on the ballot, we are all going to Congress. Bringing our community’s voice to Washington is only possible when I hear from you about the issues important to you — thank you for doing your part and for the opportunity to share my thoughts with you on this matter.
On March 1st, 2026, President Trump and Israel launched coordinated attacks on Iran. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several of his top advisors were killed, as well as Iranian civilians. These strikes were carried out without congressional authorization and President Trump has failed to articulate a cogent goal of the attacks or a clear plan for a resolution in the region.
These attacks escalate tensions in the Middle East, put American service members at risk, and endanger civilians in Iran. The Iranian regime is brutal and oppressive, and the Iranian people deserve safety and freedom. However, Trump’s actions are leaving Americans with more questions than answers. At a time when American families are facing economic challenges at home, we should not be asked to bear the costs of another open-ended conflict.
I voted in favor of the War Powers Resolution, which would reverse President Trump’s Authorization for Use of Military Force. Congress is the only governmental body with the ability to declare war, and any acts of war being waged in the name of the United States without congressional approval are illegal.
I am thinking of the loved ones of American soldiers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, and I continue to pray for the safety and protection of our troops as they carry out these operations.
It is my honor to serve our community in Congress. For a full list of services my office provides and how to get in touch, please visit sykes.house.gov/services. If I can ever be of assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Sincerely,
Rep. Emilia Strong Sykes
Ohio’s 13th Congressional District
